What it is

The Seas pavilion opened in 1986 as The Living Seas, a serious marine science exhibit with a hydrolator elevator gag and a shuttle ride to an underwater base. In 2007 Disney overlaid a Finding Nemo storyline on the ride portion, and the result is much better than that description suggests, because of one trick.

You ride a clamshell vehicle through a short animated sequence in which Marlin and Dory search for Nemo. Then the track turns and runs alongside the actual saltwater aquarium — 5.7 million gallons of it, one of the largest in the world — while animated characters are projected onto the glass so they appear to swim among the live fish, rays, and sharks. It genuinely works. Children believe it completely.

The whole thing takes four minutes and rarely has a line worth mentioning. The reason to come to this pavilion, though, is what happens after you get off: the aquarium exhibits, the manatees, and Turtle Talk with Crush are all free and all better than the ride.

What riding it is actually like

The queue is a walkway themed as a beach and a dock, mostly outdoors and shaded, which is worth knowing on a hot day because it is not air-conditioned until you get inside. Loading is on a moving platform into a two-bench clamshell.

The first half is animation on screens and in dioramas — the reef, the jellyfish field, the EAC turtle sequence. The anglerfish moment lands in a dark passage and is the one beat that startles small kids. It is quick.

The last ninety seconds are the reason to ride. The vehicle swings along the aquarium wall and you are looking at live sea turtles, cownose rays, and a reef community while cartoon fish swim over them. Sit on the right side; the tank is on the right for the entire stretch.

Is The Seas with Nemo & Friends scary?

One scene puts you in front of an anglerfish in near-darkness with a sudden lunge and a loud noise. That is the entire scary content of the ride and it lasts about eight seconds. Everything else is bright reef animation. Toddlers who are fine with dark rooms are fine here.

Clamobiles load from a continuously moving platform and can be slowed or stopped on request. The shell has a high side you step over and the seat is low; getting out is harder than getting in for anyone with knee trouble. There is a stationary transfer vehicle available.

Tips that actually help

  • Sit on the right side of the clamshell. The aquarium runs along the right for the whole payoff section, and the left seat spends that time looking at a wall.
  • The exit puts you in SeaBase, the aquarium level. Do not walk out — the manatee viewing area, the shark tank, and the dolphin windows are all free and most people leave without seeing them.
  • You can enter the aquarium exhibits without riding at all. There is a bypass door to the left of the ride entrance, which is the move if the ride line is long or your party has a nervous toddler.
  • Feeding and training demonstrations at the dolphin and manatee windows happen on a posted schedule at the pavilion, not in the app. Ask a cast member inside for the times when you enter.
  • This is the coldest building in EPCOT. In August, the two-level aquarium hall is the best free relief in the park.

The Seas with Nemo & Friends: common questions

Is there a height requirement for The Seas with Nemo & Friends?

No height requirement. Lap infants are permitted and children under seven need an adult in the vehicle.

Is the anglerfish scene scary?

It is the one moment that gets kids: a dark passage, a sudden lunge, and a loud roar lasting a few seconds. Tell them it is coming and it usually lands as fun. Nothing else on the ride is remotely frightening.

Is the aquarium real?

Completely. The tank holds about 5.7 million gallons of saltwater and houses sharks, rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and a manatee rehabilitation program. The animated characters are projected onto the viewing glass.

Can I see the aquarium without riding?

Yes. There is a walk-in entrance beside the ride queue that takes you straight to the SeaBase exhibit level. It is free and there is no wait.

How long is the ride?

About four minutes, of which the last ninety seconds alongside the live aquarium are the part worth waiting for.
