What it is

Rancho del Zocalo sits between Frontierland and Adventureland with a big tiled courtyard shaded by mature trees and string lighting. The menu covers enchiladas, carne asada, burritos, a citrus-marinated chicken plate, and rice and beans, and portions are among the largest at any counter service in Disneyland.

The seating is the reason regulars come here. There are more tables than almost anywhere else in the park, they are genuinely shaded, and there is a fountain and enough space between tables that a family with a stroller can actually sit down without blocking a walkway. On a crowded Saturday at 1 PM, when every other counter-service courtyard is full, this one usually is not.

The food is competent Americanized Mexican rather than anything you would seek out at home, but it is well-portioned, reliably hot, and the vegetarian and vegan options are properly built dishes rather than an afterthought.

Our verdict

The best combination of price, portion size, and seating in the park. The food is fine rather than memorable, but on a hot crowded day the shaded courtyard is worth more than better cooking somewhere you cannot sit.

Tips for Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante

  • This is the most reliable place in Disneyland to find a shaded table at peak lunch. Come here when the Fantasyland and Main Street options are jammed.
  • Mobile order and send one person ahead for a table — the courtyard is large but turns over slowly.
  • The plates are large enough that two children can share one, which changes the math on a family meal here.
  • It is directly on the walkway between Frontierland and Adventureland, so it is easy to fold into a route rather than making a trip.
  • The tables at the back of the courtyard near the fountain are quieter and shaded longest into the afternoon.

Chicken Enchiladas

Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante

Rolled corn tortillas filled with chicken and sauced, served with rice and beans as a full counter-service plate in the shaded Frontierland courtyard.

Our take: Solid Americanized Mexican in the best shaded seating in the park, and the portion is large enough for two children to split. You are eating here for the courtyard as much as the plate, and that is a fair trade at lunch.

Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante: common questions

Is there enough seating at Rancho del Zocalo?

More than almost anywhere else at Disneyland. The courtyard is large, mature trees provide real shade, and it is the location most likely to have an open table during the 12 to 2 PM crush. That alone makes it worth routing toward.

Are there vegan options?

Yes, and they are properly constructed plates rather than a side of rice and beans. The menu marks plant-based items clearly and the counter staff can confirm preparation. It is one of the better vegan counter-service options in the park.

Is it air conditioned?

No — the seating is an outdoor courtyard, though it is well shaded by trees and structures. For genuine air conditioning at a meal, the Plaza Inn dining room or the Blue Bayou are the options.
