Sunset Boulevard branches right off Hollywood Boulevard and runs uphill toward the Hollywood Tower Hotel, which anchors the view from the moment you enter the park. It opened in 1994 with Tower of Terror and picked up Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in 1999, which between them make this the thrill end of the park.

Tower of Terror is the most frightening attraction at Walt Disney World and the best-built one: the queue and lobby alone justify the standby line on a first visit, and the drop sequence is randomized so no two rides match. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets launches from a standstill to roughly sixty miles an hour in under three seconds and inverts three times in the dark; it was rethemed from the Aerosmith version and reopened to all guests on May 26, 2026 at the same 48-inch requirement.

The street also holds Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage in a covered amphitheater, and the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater at the top of the hill where Fantasmic plays. Between those two venues and the two coasters, this land absorbs a very large share of the park's evening crowd, which is exactly why the rest of the park empties during the nighttime show.

Sunset Ranch Market, the open-air food court running down one side, has the most flexible eating in the park: several counters sharing one covered seating area, so a group that cannot agree can all get what they want and sit together.

Sunset Boulevard tips

  • Do the Tower of Terror standby queue on your first ride even if you hold a Lightning Lane; the Lightning Lane route skips the gardens and most of the lobby, which is the best room in the park.
  • Rock 'n' Roller Coaster has a test seat outside the entrance. Use it before queueing if the over-the-shoulder harness might be a problem.
  • Sunset Ranch Market counters share seating, so split your party across windows and meet at a table. Nobody checks which counter your food came from.
  • The whole park empties toward this street during Fantasmic. If you are skipping the show, that hour is the best ride window of the day everywhere else.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

A 199-foot drop ride inside a decaying hotel, with a randomized drop sequence and the best queue and pre-show Disney has ever built.

The Hollywood Tower Hotel opened in 1994 and it remains the finest piece of environmental storytelling at Walt Disney World. Before you get anywhere near a drop, you walk through an overgrown garden, a dust-covered lobby frozen mid-check-in, a library where a television plays a black-and-white introduction, and a boiler room. Every one of those spaces is built to a standard that most modern attractions do not attempt.

Tips for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
  • The drop profile is randomized between rides, so consecutive rides give you a genuinely different sequence. That is the argument for riding it twice.
  • Back row, outside seat, is the best combination: strongest airtime and the clearest view through the doors at the top.
  • Do the standby queue on your first ride even if you hold a Lightning Lane. The Lightning Lane route skips the gardens and most of the lobby.
  • Pockets empty out on the drops. Anything loose goes into a zipped pocket or the free cubbies at the load platform, and glasses need a strap.
  • Repeat visitors: the lobby set changes subtly over the years but the mail on the front desk, the luggage tags and the card room to the left of the queue reward a slow walk. Ask a bellhop about the hotel and they will stay in character for as long as you keep asking.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets

A pitch-dark indoor launch coaster with three inversions that goes from a standstill to highway speed in under three seconds; 48 inches to ride.

This is the fastest and most aggressive ride at Hollywood Studios. A twenty-four passenger train sits at a dead stop, a countdown runs, and then a linear induction launch throws you from zero to roughly sixty miles an hour in under three seconds, straight into a rollover loop. What follows is about ninety seconds of indoor track in near-total darkness with three inversions, all set to a soundtrack piped through speakers in your headrest.

Tips for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets
  • Back row for the strongest launch, front row for the best look at the lighting effects. The queue splits for row selection near the load platform.
  • 48 inches is the tallest height requirement at Hollywood Studios, and there is no way around it. Rider switch is available and is the correct plan for a family with one child under the line.
  • There is a test seat outside the entrance. Use it before queueing if the over-the-shoulder harness might be a problem; the restraint is less forgiving than most modern coasters.
  • Empty your pockets completely. The three inversions will take a phone out of a loose pocket and there is no net over the track.
  • Repeat visitors: the ride audio is per-train rather than per-park, so different trains run different soundtrack mixes. Riding twice in a row usually gets you a different track.

Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage

A 25-minute condensed stage musical of the 1991 film in a covered amphitheater on Sunset Boulevard, running since the park's early years.

This is a genuine Broadway-style production compressed to twenty-five minutes: live singers, a full costume department, choreographed ensemble numbers and a set that transforms twice. It has run at this park in some form since 1991, which makes it one of the longest-running stage shows at any Disney park, and the production values have been maintained rather than allowed to slide.

Tips for Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage
  • Sit toward the back of the center block. The choreography is built for a wide view and the front rows lose the shape of the ensemble numbers.
  • The theater is covered but not air conditioned. It is shade rather than relief, so bring water for an afternoon performance.
  • Never spend a Lightning Lane Multi Pass on this. The amphitheater holds fifteen hundred and almost never fills.
  • The last performance of the day is usually the least crowded and the coolest, and it puts you on Sunset Boulevard right where you want to be for the nighttime show.
  • Repeat visitors: the production has been restaged more than once since 1991, with revised costumes and a reworked ballroom sequence, so it is not the show you saw as a child even though the running order is familiar.

Fantasmic!

The park's nighttime show: a 30-minute water, fire and projection spectacular in a 6,900-seat amphitheater, with live performers and boats.

Fantasmic! is staged in a purpose-built amphitheater carved into the hillside behind Sunset Boulevard, using a lagoon, an island stage, three walls of water used as projection screens, fire effects, live performers, a floating barge and a very large dragon. It opened at this park in October 1998 and it remains the biggest single production Walt Disney World stages on a nightly basis.

Tips for Fantasmic!
  • Center section, halfway up. That is the sweet spot for the water screens and the fire, and it keeps you out of the mist zone in the first several rows.
  • The front rows get genuinely damp from the water screens. On a cool night that matters more than people expect.
  • A Lightning Lane Multi Pass selection here gets you into a reserved seating area but not a better seat than arriving forty minutes early does. It is worth it only if you would rather ride during that window.
  • The villain sequence is the part that upsets small children, and it lasts several minutes. If your child is already tired, watch the projection show on Hollywood Boulevard instead.
  • Repeat visitors: the amphitheater empties from the top down, so seats in the upper center let you leave first even though they feel further from the exit. The lower sections take fifteen minutes to clear.

Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy

A ten-minute standing show in the Sunset Showcase where a full-size Lightning McQueen vehicle appears on a wraparound screen stage.

The Sunset Showcase theater holds a wide wraparound screen and a physical Lightning McQueen vehicle on a rig in front of it. The show has him deliver a racing lesson that goes wrong, with the screen simulating a track, and it lasts about ten minutes standing.

Tips for Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy
  • It is standing room only for about ten minutes. Bring a stroller-free plan or be ready to hold a small child.
  • Stand toward the back and center. The screen wraps, and from the front you cannot take in the whole image.
  • There are character photo ops in the exit area that most people walk straight past.
  • Repeat visitors: the Sunset Showcase is a flexible venue that Disney uses for other programming at times, so confirm in the app that this show is running on the day you visit.
