Aunt Cass Cafe is the rethemed successor to the Pacific Wharf Cafe, reopened as part of the San Fransokyo Square conversion in 2023 and named for the character who runs the cafe in Big Hero 6. The core product has not changed: soup or chili served in a hollowed sourdough bread bowl.
The sourdough is the reason this location has survived every retheme. It is proper San Francisco-style sourdough with a real crust and a genuinely sour crumb, and a bread bowl of clam chowder here is one of the few things at this park that would hold up outside it.
The retheme added Japanese-influenced items to the board alongside the originals, which broadened the menu without breaking what worked. Seating is all outdoors on the waterfront terrace, shaded in patches.
The bread carries it, and the bread is genuinely good. The best value lunch in the park at around $15 for something that fills you up.
