What it is

Backlot Express sits beside Star Tours and is dressed as a working prop and paint shop: scenic flats leaning against the walls, tools and paint cans on shelves, drafting tables, half-finished set pieces. Some of the rooms carry Star Wars props left over from earlier years, which regulars go looking for.

The menu is burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads and a hot dog or two. It is the same quality tier as the other quick-service counters here, which is to say fine and forgettable. What sets it apart is the setting: the interior rooms are among the better-themed casual dining spaces at Walt Disney World and almost nobody notices because they are eating a burger.

It also has both indoor rooms and a shaded outdoor patio, which gives it more flexibility than most counters in this park.

Our verdict

The best-themed quick service in the park and the food is average, so treat it as a place to sit rather than a place to eat. Still the counter I would choose in this half of the park.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Angus bacon cheeseburger
  • Grilled chicken sandwich
  • Southwest salad
  • All-beef hot dog

Tips for Backlot Express

  • Walk through all the interior rooms before you sit. The far room has the best prop dressing and is usually the emptiest.
  • It is the closest full quick-service to Star Tours and the Indiana Jones amphitheater, which makes it the right lunch stop for an Echo Lake morning.
  • Mobile order windows here are usually available at short notice even at peak, because the location is off the main walkway.
  • The covered patio is a better rain shelter than it looks; the awning covers most of the seating.
  • Repeat visitors: the props scattered through the dining rooms have been rotated and added to over the years, and several are genuine pieces from earlier attractions.

Angus Bacon Cheeseburger

Backlot Express

$14.99

A bacon cheeseburger with fries served in a quick-service counter dressed as a working studio prop and scenery shop beside Star Tours.

Our take: The burger is average and the dining rooms are the best-themed casual space in the park. Eat it in the far room, where the prop dressing is worth more than the lunch.

Savory

Backlot Express: common questions

Is Backlot Express any good?

The food is standard theme park counter service: competent burgers, chicken sandwiches and salads. The dining rooms are the reason to choose it over the other counters, because they carry real prop and scenic dressing that most guests walk straight past.

Does Backlot Express have indoor seating?

Yes, several connected air-conditioned rooms plus a covered outdoor patio. It is one of the more reliable places to sit down indoors in this park without a reservation.

Can you use mobile order?

Yes, and windows are usually available at short notice because the location sits off the main walkway. It is one of the easier mobile order counters to get a near-immediate slot at.

What is the best thing on the menu?

The bacon cheeseburger is the most reliable order. Vegetarians do better here than at most counters in the park, and the location carries a plant-based option year round.
