What it is
The wheel has been on the pier since the park opened in 2001, originally as the Sun Wheel, rebranded as Mickey's Fun Wheel in 2009, and rethemed again in 2018 as Pixar Pal-A-Round. Through all of it the machine has been the same: a 150-foot eccentric wheel with 24 gondolas, sixteen of which slide along curved interior rails as the wheel rotates and eight of which are fixed in place.
This is the most important thing to understand about it, and the ride does a poor job of communicating it. There are two separate lines. The swinging line puts you in a gondola that slides along a rail, so as the wheel turns your car slips inward and outward with a genuine free-slide drop each time. The non-swinging line gives you an ordinary, still observation gondola.
The view from the top is the best in the park — Paradise Bay, the whole of Pixar Pier, Cars Land's rockwork, Grizzly Peak, and on a clear day the mountains behind Anaheim. The ride cycle is long, roughly nine minutes, which is generous by any standard.
What riding it is actually like
In a non-swinging gondola, this is a slow, quiet observation wheel. The car pauses at various points as others load, you get a long time at height, and it is one of the few genuinely restful things at this park.
In a swinging gondola, the car begins sliding as soon as you clear the loading platform. The slides are not gentle — the gondola runs down its rail and stops against the end with a bang, repeatedly, for nine minutes. Sitting at the low end of the car as it slides gives you the strongest sensation.
The swinging version is the single most effective motion-sickness generator at either Disneyland Resort park. Nine minutes is a long time to be sliding back and forth at height.
Is Pixar Pal-A-Round scary?
There are two completely different rides here. The non-swinging gondolas are a calm 150-foot observation wheel. The swinging gondolas slide freely along interior rails, dropping and lurching as the wheel turns, and they genuinely frighten people who were expecting a Ferris wheel. Choose the correct queue and this is a 1; choose wrong and it is a 4.

Certain non-swinging gondolas accommodate a wheelchair without transfer; ask at the entrance and expect a longer wait for the right car. The swinging gondolas require transfer and the ability to brace against sudden sliding.
Tips that actually help
- Read the queue signs carefully. The two lines split before you reach the platform and cast members will not talk you out of your choice. The swinging side is not a slightly bouncier version — it is a different ride.
- The non-swinging line is almost always the longer wait, because most people want the calm version and there are only eight of those gondolas.
- Ride at dusk. The view across the bay at that hour is the best free photograph in the park, and the wheel's own lighting comes on partway through the cycle.
- Nine minutes with no exit is a long commitment for a small child who might need a bathroom. Go before you queue.
- Repeat visitors: sitting at the outward end of a swinging gondola produces a noticeably stronger slide than sitting at the inward end, because you are the weight that drives it.

What is the difference between the swinging and non-swinging gondolas?
Non-swinging gondolas are fixed and behave like an ordinary observation wheel. Swinging gondolas slide freely along curved rails inside the wheel, dropping and slamming against the rail ends repeatedly for the whole nine-minute cycle. They are separate queues and they are genuinely different rides.
Is there a height requirement?
No. Both versions are open to all heights, which is exactly why families accidentally end up in a swinging gondola with a terrified five-year-old. Choose the queue deliberately.
Which side makes people motion sick?
The swinging side, badly. Nine minutes of repeated sliding at height is the worst motion-sickness exposure in the park. The non-swinging side causes no problems for almost anyone.
How long is the ride?
About nine minutes, sometimes longer depending on loading. There is no way off once you are on, which matters for anyone claustrophobic or with a small bladder.
Was this Mickey's Fun Wheel?
Yes. The same wheel has operated since 2001, first as the Sun Wheel, then as Mickey's Fun Wheel from 2009, and as Pixar Pal-A-Round since the 2018 Pixar Pier retheme. The mechanism has never changed.
