No longer operating

Closed, and what replaced it

These come up constantly in searches and in old guidebooks, so we keep them listed rather than quietly deleting them.

AttractionLandWhat happened
Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!Hollywood LandClosed in early 2026 so the show building and surrounding Hollywood Land footprint can be turned over to Disney's Avatar project. There is no reopening — the ride is gone permanently. The Avatar experience itself remains in early development with no official opening date announced.
The Magic of Disney AnimationHollywood LandDisney has announced that The Magic of Disney Animation returns to the Disney Animation building in September 2026. That month is Disney-stated rather than independently verified, and opening dates for returning experiences move; treat it as an announcement, not a guarantee, until it is actually operating.
Avengers Infinity DefenseAvengers CampusAnnounced as the E-ticket centerpiece of the Avengers Campus expansion. The commonly reported 2027 to 2028 window is a projection based on construction pace and Disney's investment announcements, not a Disney-stated opening date. No official date has been given. Treat everything about ride system, capacity and height requirement as unconfirmed until Disney publishes it.
Stark Flight LabAvengers CampusAnnounced as the second attraction in the Avengers Campus expansion alongside Avengers Infinity Defense. The 2027 to 2028 window reported for the expansion is a projection, not a Disney-stated date. No official opening date has been announced and no ride details have been confirmed.
The Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorAvengers CampusClosed permanently on January 2 2017. The building and drop system were rebuilt and reopened in May 2017 as Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!. The Twilight Zone version will not return to this park.
California Screamin'Pixar PierClosed permanently in January 2018. The same track and launch system reopened in June 2018 as Incredicoaster, with new theming, tunnels, show scenes and audio. The coaster layout is unchanged.
It's Tough to Be a Bug!Avengers CampusClosed permanently on March 19 2018 along with the rest of a bug's land, to clear the site for Avengers Campus. The Disney's Animal Kingdom version in Florida has also since been replaced. This show will not return to California Adventure.
Mickey's Fun WheelPixar PierRetired as a name and theme in 2018 during the Pixar Pier conversion. The wheel itself never closed permanently — it operates today as Pixar Pal-A-Round with the same swinging and non-swinging gondolas.
MaliboomerParadise Gardens ParkClosed permanently on September 7 2010 and dismantled as part of the park's first major overhaul. The three towers were removed from the Paradise Pier skyline entirely and nothing replaced them on the site.
Superstar LimoHollywood LandClosed permanently on January 11 2002, less than a year after the park opened. The building was rebuilt as Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!, which itself closed in early 2026 for the Avatar project.

3 attractions

Buena Vista Street

The park's entrance street, rebuilt in 2012 as 1920s Los Angeles as Walt Disney would have found it.

Red Car Trolley

Any height

Transportation · 4 min

A working replica of a 1920s Pacific Electric streetcar that shuttles between the park entrance and Hollywood Land.

The Red Car Trolley opened with the 2012 Buena Vista Street overhaul, and it exists mostly to make a short walk feel like a period piece. The cars are modern reproductions of the Pacific Electric Railway streetcars that once ran across Los Angeles, complete with wooden bench seats, brass fittings, and a live operator who works the controls by hand.

Tips for Red Car Trolley
  • Ride it in the direction of Hollywood Land in the first hour of the day — the light is behind you and the streets are empty enough that the trolley actually moves.
  • Skip it entirely between noon and 5pm. The line is often longer than the walk and the benches bake in direct sun.
  • The Hollywood Land stop is a two-minute walk from Avengers Campus, which makes the trolley a genuinely reasonable way to cross the park with a tired preschooler.
  • Ask the operator about the car number. Each trolley is named and numbered after a real Pacific Electric line, and the operators know the history cold if you give them an opening.

Five & Dime

Any height

Show · 20 min

A jazz-age band that rolls onto Buena Vista Street in a battered flatbed truck and plays swing arrangements of Disney standards.

Five & Dime is the resident street act on Buena Vista Street: a small brass-and-rhythm ensemble fronted by a vocalist, delivered from the back of a period delivery truck that parks itself near Carthay Circle. The conceit is that they are a struggling group of musicians who have driven cross-country to break into pictures in 1920s Los Angeles.

Tips for Five & Dime
  • Check the times board at the entrance turnstiles rather than the app — street entertainment is more reliably posted on the physical board.
  • Stand on the shop side of the street, not the truck side. You get shade, better sound because the horns project outward, and you are not in the path of the trolley.
  • If you are eating at Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe, take an outdoor table around the posted set time. You will get the entire show sitting down with a cold drink.
  • The group performs a different holiday-season book of arrangements; the standard set described here is what runs the rest of the year.

Buena Vista Street Character Greetings

Any height

Character meet · 3 min

Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and friends appear in 1920s Los Angeles outfits along the park's entrance street.

Disney California Adventure's entrance street is where the classic characters appear, and they appear here in clothes you will not see anywhere else at the resort — period Los Angeles daywear rather than the standard costumes. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Pluto all rotate through the area near Carthay Circle and the Buena Vista Street plaza.

Tips for Buena Vista Street Character Greetings
  • Do these in the first thirty minutes of the day. Everyone else sprints past to Radiator Springs Racers, and the entrance street is the emptiest it will be until closing.
  • Ask the PhotoPass photographer to also take a shot on your own phone. They will, and it means you get the image immediately rather than after you link the card.
  • The last hour before park close is the second-best window — the crowd has migrated to Paradise Bay for the nighttime show.
  • If a specific character matters to your kid, ask any Buena Vista Street cast member what the rotation looks like. They know and they will tell you honestly if it is a long shot.

Hollywood Land

The park's studio district, now thinner than it has ever been and built almost entirely around theaters.

Animation Academy

Any height

Show · 25 min

A working Disney animator walks a roomful of guests through drawing one character, start to finish, in about 25 minutes.

Animation Academy is a live class inside the Disney Animation building, and it is the most underrated hour in the park. A real instructor stands at a lit drawing desk projected onto a screen and takes the room through constructing a single character step by step, from basic shapes to final line. You get paper, a pencil, and a hard surface. You keep the drawing.

Tips for Animation Academy
  • Check the posted schedule when you first walk into the Animation building in the morning, then plan your afternoon around a specific session — the character taught differs by class and the good ones fill up.
  • Ask an instructor which class of the day is teaching the hardest character. Late-afternoon sessions frequently get the more ambitious ones because the crowd skews older.
  • Take the paper home flat. The gift shops sell tube mailers, but a park map folded around the drawing works and costs nothing.
  • Repeat visitors: ask the instructor what they worked on. Many rotate in from production work, and the answers are genuinely interesting if you catch them between sessions.

Character Close-Up

Any height

Character meet · 4 min

The indoor character greeting rooms inside the Disney Animation building, with a rotating lineup and no sun.

Character Close-Up is the greeting space off the main hall of the Disney Animation building. The lineup rotates and is posted on the app; over the years it has hosted characters from Frozen, Moana, Encanto and other animated features, generally two at a time in separate rooms.

Tips for Character Close-Up
  • Check the app's character list before walking over. The lineup changes and the building has more than one greeting room active at a time.
  • The queue is shortest immediately after a nighttime show ends in the last thirty minutes of operation, when everyone else is walking toward the exit.
  • Bring a permanent marker rather than the pen that comes with an autograph book. Costumed characters with gloved hands manage a fat marker far better.
  • If your child is nervous, do this greeting before any outdoor one. The controlled indoor setting is a much gentler first encounter.

Disney Junior Dream Factory

Any height

Stage show · 20 min

A 20-minute sing-and-dance show for preschoolers, staged indoors with puppet characters from the Disney Junior lineup.

The Disney Theater in Hollywood Land has held some version of a Disney Junior show since the park's early years, and the current production is Disney Junior Dream Factory. The framing is a workshop where a host and a rotating cast of Disney Junior characters build things — songs, dances, a party — with the audience doing the work alongside them.

Tips for Disney Junior Dream Factory
  • Arrive fifteen minutes before showtime for the first performance of the day and you will walk straight in; later shows can fill and turn people away.
  • The back bench is the parent's seat. You can see over every head, your bag is off the floor, and you are two steps from the exit if it goes badly.
  • There is no stroller parking inside — leave it in the marked area outside and take valuables with you.
  • Repeat visitors should note that the character roster is refreshed periodically to track the current Disney Junior slate, so a show you saw two years ago is unlikely to be the same one now.

Mickey's PhilharMagic

Any height

Film · 12 min

A 3D film in which Donald Duck loses Mickey's magic hat and falls through a run of Disney musical numbers.

PhilharMagic is a 12-minute 3D feature built around Donald Duck being catastrophically bad at his job. He commandeers a conductor's hat, sets off a chain of events, and is flung through set pieces built on Disney animated musical sequences before being deposited, humiliated, back where he started.

Tips for Mickey's PhilharMagic
  • Sit center, two-thirds back. Front rows put the 3D effects uncomfortably close and the side sections lose the depth entirely.
  • This is the best rainy-day and heat-of-the-day attraction in the park's north half. The house is huge and the wait almost never exceeds one show cycle.
  • Kids under four often do better without the glasses. The image still reads and the effects still land, and it avoids the fight.
  • Hang back for the final beat after the film ends — the joke is placed behind the seating, not on the screen.

Hyperion Theater

Any height

Stage show · 35 min

The park's 2,000-seat proscenium theater, home to limited-run Broadway-scale stage productions that change every few years.

The Hyperion is a real theater — a full fly tower, an orchestra pit, a balcony, and around two thousand seats. It has housed a series of large-scale productions since the park opened in 2001, each running for a period of years before being retired and replaced.

Tips for Hyperion Theater
  • Confirm what is playing on the day you go. There are stretches when the theater is dark between productions and no amount of planning fixes that.
  • Queue thirty minutes before curtain for a center-orchestra seat; twenty minutes gets you the sides.
  • The balcony line is usually shorter than the orchestra line and often gives you the better view of large ensemble numbers.
  • This theater is the single best air-conditioned escape in the park, but you are committing 35 to 55 minutes — do not start the queue if your nighttime show viewing spot matters to you.

Avengers Campus

A compact Marvel land with two rides, a lot of character work, and a major expansion under construction.

Simulator · 3 min · Multi Pass

A randomized free-fall drop tower through a collector's fortress, with a soundtrack that fires on every ascent.

Mission: BREAKOUT! took over the drop tower that had operated as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror since 2004 and reopened in May 2017 with a completely new exterior, queue, story and ride profile. The premise: the Collector has the Guardians of the Galaxy locked in his private museum, and Rocket wants your help springing them.

Tips for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
  • Use the single rider line without hesitation. It typically cuts a 60-minute posted wait to well under 15, and because the ride profile is randomized you are not sacrificing anything by splitting your group.
  • Do this first or last. Posted waits build fast after 10am and stay high until the final hour, when they collapse.
  • Empty your pockets in the queue lockers area — loose phones do not survive vertical airtime, and there is nowhere to secure them in the vehicle.
  • The 40-inch requirement is measured with shoes on at the stick outside the entrance. If your child is borderline, get measured at the park entrance in the morning and take the wristband, which stops the re-measure argument at every ride.
  • Repeat visitors: the songs are tied to specific ride profiles, so if you are chasing a particular sequence, listening for the opening bars in the loading area tells you what you are about to get.
  • There is a seasonal overlay version of this attraction during part of the year. The permanent, year-round version is the one described here.

Interactive game · 4½ min · Multi Pass

A trackless 3D shooter where you sling webs with your bare arms instead of a trigger, and your score is entirely a function of technique.

WEB SLINGERS opened with Avengers Campus in June 2021 and is the only ride at the Disneyland Resort where the control input is your own body. There is no blaster. A gesture-tracking system reads your arm motion, and a flick forward launches a web on screen. Spider-Man has lost control of an army of spider-bots and you are recruited to sling them back into containment.

Tips for WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure
  • Sling with both arms simultaneously, at chest height, with a short sharp flick. Big windmill motions register worse than small precise ones and wear your shoulders out by the second room.
  • Target bots that are attached to or near objects. Knocking one into a stack triggers a cascade worth many times a direct hit.
  • Sit on the outside seats if you care about your score — the inside seats have a person's arm in your throwing lane.
  • There is no single rider line here, and standby builds early because the land opens with the park. If you are not doing this in the first hour, use Lightning Lane Multi Pass or accept a long afternoon wait.
  • Repeat visitors: the ride tracks a cumulative score if you keep the same account linked, and wearing a WEB Suppliers suit jacket enables extra in-ride effects. Neither is advertised anywhere on the ride itself.

Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts

Any height

Show · 12 min

A live stage show in the Ancient Sanctum where Doctor Strange teaches sorcery to recruits and something goes wrong.

The Ancient Sanctum sits at the back corner of Avengers Campus, and several times a day it becomes a classroom. Doctor Strange appears and runs a short lesson in the mystic arts, drawing on volunteers from the audience and demonstrating spellwork with a combination of practical illusion, projection mapping, fog and lighting.

Tips for Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts
  • Check showtimes early — there are only a handful per day and missing the last one means missing it entirely.
  • Take the first show of the day. The courtyard is in shade at that hour and the crowd is a third the size of an afternoon show.
  • Kids who want to be picked should be at the front and visibly enthusiastic; the performer chooses from the front two rows of standing guests.
  • Repeat visitors: the performer varies and the between-effect patter is largely improvised, so a second viewing with a different actor is a meaningfully different show.

Avengers Campus Character Encounters

Any height

Character meet · 3 min

Spider-Man, Black Panther, Thor, Captain America, Loki, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Doctor Strange and Groot appear across the land on a rotating schedule.

Avengers Campus was designed around the idea that the heroes are staff, not attractions, so they arrive and depart from the land's buildings rather than standing at a marked photo spot with a rope line. Some do form a proper queue — Spider-Man and Black Panther usually do — while others simply appear, do something, and go.

Tips for Avengers Campus Character Encounters
  • If cast members start clearing the central plaza and you cannot see why, stay put. That is the tell for the rooftop stunt, and it is over in half a minute.
  • Ask any Avengers Campus cast member which hero is out next. They generally know the next thirty minutes of the rotation and will tell you.
  • There is essentially no shade in this land. Do these encounters before 11am or after 5pm and you will have a much better time than the people doing them at 2pm.
  • Repeat visitors: the performers here improvise heavily and stay in character through anything, so bringing a specific in-universe question rather than asking for a photo produces a much better interaction.

Spider-Bot Battles

Any height

Interactive game · 5 min

Remote-control spider-bots bought at WEB Suppliers fight each other in arenas set up around the land.

The spider-bots sold at WEB Suppliers are not just toys with a Marvel logo on them. Each is a small remote-controlled robot with an attack mode, and Avengers Campus has arenas where two owners can face off. Cast members referee, other guests gather to watch, and the whole thing takes about five minutes per bout.

Tips for Spider-Bot Battles
  • Ask a cast member at WEB Suppliers to demonstrate the attack trigger before you leave the shop. The instructions are minimal and half the kids in the arenas never work out that there is one.
  • Carry your bot around the land — it reacts to specific spots in Avengers Campus that are not signposted anywhere.
  • Battles are free once you own a bot, so this is a way to get repeated value out of one purchase across a multi-day trip.
  • Bots go through batteries. Buy spares in the shop rather than hunting for them later, because nothing else in the park sells the right size.

Cars Land

A full-scale recreation of Radiator Springs against a man-made butte range, and the park's best single achievement.

Dark ride · 5 min · Single Pass

The park's best ride: a slow-moving trip through Radiator Springs that ends in a side-by-side outdoor race across the rockwork.

Radiator Springs Racers opened with Cars Land in June 2012 and remains the most expensive and most technically accomplished attraction the Disneyland Resort has ever built. It runs on the same enhanced motion vehicle system as Test Track at EPCOT, but where that ride is a proving ground, this one is a narrative dark ride that happens to end with a race.

Tips for Radiator Springs Racers
  • This is a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction, meaning it is bought per ride rather than covered by Multi Pass. If you only buy one Single Pass all day at this park, buy it for this.
  • The single rider line is excellent and badly underused — routinely 15 to 25 minutes against a 90-minute standby. Groups of two who ride separately lose almost nothing.
  • Ride once in daylight and once after dark if you can. The outdoor race section is a completely different experience under the neon, and the queue collapses in the final hour of the night.
  • The standby queue is the longest walk in the park and the outer switchbacks have no shade. If it is over 85 degrees, use single rider or Lightning Lane rather than standing in it.
  • Repeat visitors: the ride randomly sends you to either Ramone's paint shop or Luigi's tire shop before the race. Riding twice back to back is the only reliable way to see both, and the single rider line makes that cheap.

Spinner · 1½ min

A whip-style ride where tractor-drawn trailers swing between turntables — far more forceful than it looks.

Mater's Junkyard Jamboree is a Disney reworking of a classic carnival whip. Twenty-two small trailers are towed by baby tractors around a set of interlocking turntables, and every time the tractor changes turntables the trailer behind it slings out to the side. The result is a sequence of snapping lateral swings, one after another, for ninety seconds.

Tips for Mater's Junkyard Jamboree
  • Ride it at night. Cars Land's neon lighting is the best thing in the park after dark and this ride puts you in the middle of it for ninety seconds.
  • Put the smaller rider on the inside of the bench. The outside rider absorbs the swing; the inside rider gets crushed.
  • Each of the seven tractors has its own song. If you are riding with a kid who cares, ask the loading cast member which tractor is which — they know.
  • The queue is almost entirely unshaded and moves slowly for its length. In summer, do this after 6pm rather than in the afternoon.
  • It has a holiday overlay for part of the year with different music and decor; the version described here is the permanent one.

Full guide to Mater's Junkyard Jamboree →

Spinner · 2 min

Trackless dancing cars that pair off and swing through a choreographed routine on an open floor.

Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters replaced Luigi's Flying Tires in 2016, and the swap was a straight upgrade. The original was an air-hockey-style ride that broke down constantly and moved slower than most people could walk. The replacement uses trackless vehicle technology to send cars gliding across an open plaza in a choreographed dance, pairing up, circling and reversing in patterns.

Tips for Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters
  • There are three different dance routines with different music. If you want to see them all, ride back to back in the last hour of the night when the wait drops under fifteen minutes.
  • Watch from the queue rail before you ride. Seeing the pattern from outside is half the appeal and you cannot see it from inside a car.
  • The queue passes through Luigi's tire shop, which is packed with sight gags and Italian-language jokes on the wall calendars and posters. Read them rather than looking at your phone.
  • Under-7s need a rider 14 or older with them even though the height requirement is only 32 inches — a detail that catches out groups sending two kids together.
  • It runs a holiday overlay for part of the year with different music. The permanent, year-round version is what is described here.

Pixar Pier

The 2018 rebuild of the old boardwalk, with the resort's fastest coaster and its best cookie.

Incredicoaster

48"122cm

Roller coaster · 2½ min · Multi Pass

The resort's fastest ride: a launched steel coaster around Paradise Bay with one loop and a lot of airtime.

Incredicoaster is the 2018 retheme of California Screamin', the coaster that opened with the park in 2001 and defined its skyline for seventeen years. The track layout is unchanged — same launch, same loop, same 6,000-foot circuit around Paradise Bay — but the theming, the tunnels, the audio and the on-ride show scenes are all new, built around the Parr family chasing Jack-Jack.

Tips for Incredicoaster
  • Ride in the back row. The launch is harder and every hill produces more airtime because the train is already moving when the back car crests.
  • The single rider line is short and consistently overlooked, often turning an hour standby into fifteen minutes.
  • After dark this ride is transformed. The entire circuit runs above the water with the pier lit, and the launch into darkness is significantly more intense than the daytime version.
  • Secure everything. Loose items leave pockets on the launch, and the recovery process for something dropped over the water is not quick.
  • Repeat visitors: the tunnel show scenes are timed to the train, and you can only really read one or two per ride. Front row on the right side gives the best look at the mid-circuit scene most people never see.

Interactive game · 6 min · Multi Pass

A 3D carnival shooting gallery on a spinning tracked vehicle — the most replayable ride in the park.

Toy Story Midway Mania! opened at this park in June 2008 in the pier's old shooting-gallery building, and it has been near-permanently busy ever since. You ride a tracked vehicle that rotates to face a series of screens, each running a different carnival midway game, and fire a spring-loaded cannon at 3D targets.

Tips for Toy Story Midway Mania!
  • Pull the string as fast as your arm allows. Most first-time riders fire a third as often as they could and blame their aim.
  • Each game hides bonus targets behind a trigger object — break the plates on the edges, pop the volcano balloons, hit the moving train. Regulars score five times a newcomer purely on knowing where those are.
  • The single rider line exists here and is badly underused. It routinely saves 40 minutes.
  • If your shoulder gets tired, switch the cannon to your other hand between screens. There is no penalty and the vehicle rotates anyway.
  • Repeat visitors: your score is displayed against the ride's daily and all-time averages at unload, and the all-time bar is a legitimate target rather than decoration.

Pixar Pal-A-Round

Any height

Spinner · 9 min

A 150-foot wheel with two separate queues: gondolas that hang still, and gondolas that slide violently along rails.

The wheel has been on the pier since the park opened in 2001, originally as the Sun Wheel, rebranded as Mickey's Fun Wheel in 2009, and rethemed again in 2018 as Pixar Pal-A-Round. Through all of it the machine has been the same: a 150-foot eccentric wheel with 24 gondolas, sixteen of which slide along curved interior rails as the wheel rotates and eight of which are fixed in place.

Tips for Pixar Pal-A-Round
  • Read the queue signs carefully. The two lines split before you reach the platform and cast members will not talk you out of your choice. The swinging side is not a slightly bouncier version — it is a different ride.
  • The non-swinging line is almost always the longer wait, because most people want the calm version and there are only eight of those gondolas.
  • Ride at dusk. The view across the bay at that hour is the best free photograph in the park, and the wheel's own lighting comes on partway through the cycle.
  • Nine minutes with no exit is a long commitment for a small child who might need a bathroom. Go before you queue.
  • Repeat visitors: sitting at the outward end of a swinging gondola produces a noticeably stronger slide than sitting at the inward end, because you are the weight that drives it.

Full guide to Pixar Pal-A-Round →

Spinner · 2 min

A spinning gondola ride themed to a memory-train tour of Riley's mind, with the highest height requirement of any ride this mild.

Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind opened in 2019 as the replacement for Flik's Flyers, which had been moved from a bug's land. It is a standard amusement-park scrambler variant: gondolas on arms extending from a rotating central hub, which lift and swing outward as the ride spins up.

Tips for Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind
  • The 40-inch requirement is the thing to check before you walk over. It is unusually tall for how mild the ride is and it turns away a lot of preschoolers.
  • Ride it at night. The rotating view of the lit pier is the only thing that elevates this above a county-fair ride.
  • If anyone in your group is prone to dizziness, this is a harder ride than it looks — two minutes of continuous rotation is more than most spinners give you.
  • The wait is nearly always under twenty minutes and drops to nothing during the nighttime show, which makes it a good filler while the crowd is at the bay.
  • Repeat visitors: the outward-most seat in each gondola gets meaningfully more swing than the inner seats, which is worth knowing if you are riding with someone who wants either more or less.

Games of the Boardwalk

Any height

Interactive game · 3 min

Four pay-per-play midway games on Pixar Pier, each themed to a Pixar film, with guaranteed-prize pricing.

Games of the Boardwalk are the only pay-to-play carnival games at either Disneyland Resort park. Four booths sit along the Pixar Pier walkway, each themed to a different Pixar property — a ring toss, a ball toss, a bottle knockdown and a target game — with a cast member running each one and prizes hanging overhead.

Tips for Games of the Boardwalk
  • Every play wins something. Knowing that in advance changes how you decide whether the price is worth it — you are buying a plush and a game, not gambling on one.
  • The ball-toss game gives the best odds of a larger prize; the ring toss gives the worst. Cast members will confirm this if you ask them straight.
  • Prices are not covered by any park ticket or pass, and the games do not accept dining plan credits.
  • Play in the evening. The booths are quiet after dark, the cast members have time to coach a kid through it, and the pier lighting makes for better photos.

Pixar Pier Character Greetings

Any height

Character meet · 3 min

Woody, Jessie, Buzz, the Incredibles and the Inside Out emotions appear along the pier on a rotating schedule.

Pixar Pier hosts the resort's densest concentration of Pixar character greetings, spread along the walkway between Incredicoaster and the wheel. The rotation has included Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Incredible, Frozone, Edna Mode, Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong, generally two or three out at a time.

Tips for Pixar Pier Character Greetings
  • Check the app's character list before crossing the bridge to the pier — the rotation is real and characters take long breaks.
  • Do these during the nighttime show if you can bear to skip a viewing. The pier empties and the lines effectively disappear.
  • Edna Mode is the best interaction on the pier and reacts to your outfit. Wear something with an opinion.
  • The greeting spots have no shade. In summer, morning or evening only.

A six-minute omnimover through the 1989 film, and the best air-conditioned refuge in the park's southern half.

Ariel's Undersea Adventure opened in 2011 in a building fronted by a giant clamshell facade on Paradise Gardens Park. It is a continuous-loading omnimover — the same vehicle system as the Haunted Mansion — running through the story of the 1989 film in a series of tableau scenes.

Tips for The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure
  • This is the park's best midday reset: six minutes, air conditioned, seated, and rarely more than a 15-minute wait even when everything else is an hour.
  • Look at the ceiling during the big musical scene. Half the animation is up there and the vehicle does not tilt you toward it.
  • If Ursula is the concern with a small child, tell them ahead of time that the loud purple octopus is in one room and then it is over. Warning them almost always works better than distracting them.
  • The queue is indoors and air conditioned past the first switchback, which is unusual for this park — even a 25-minute posted wait here is more comfortable than a 10-minute wait almost anywhere else.
  • Repeat visitors: watch for the scrim-and-lighting descent effect right after load. It is a genuinely clever piece of theater that reads as a special effect only if you are looking for it.

Roller coaster · 1½ min

A wild mouse coaster disguised as a kids' ride — the hairpin turns are the real attraction, and they are nastier than they look.

Goofy's Sky School opened in 2011 as a retheme of Mulholland Madness, which had been on the pier since the park's 2001 opening. The layout is a classic Mavericks-style wild mouse: a lift hill, a series of flat 180-degree hairpin turns at the top, then a run of short dipping drops back to the station.

Tips for Goofy's Sky School
  • Do not treat this as a starter coaster. If a nervous child's first coaster matters, Incredicoaster's smooth launch is actually easier on them than this ride's snapping corners, height requirement aside.
  • Sit in the front row if the height bothers you less than the lateral force, and the back row if it is the other way around.
  • This is one of the worst rides in the park for motion sickness — flat, fast corners are the exact trigger. Do not do it right after eating at Corn Dog Castle.
  • Waits are short all day and shortest in the last hour. This is never worth queueing more than twenty minutes for.
  • Repeat visitors: read the flight-instruction signage in the queue. It is one continuous escalating joke and almost nobody gets to the end of it.

Spinner · 1½ min

A classic chain swing ride set to a 1935 cartoon soundtrack, with the best free view of Paradise Bay in the park.

Silly Symphony Swings opened in 2010 as a retheme of the Orange Stinger, which had been on the pier since 2001 and enclosed the same swings inside a giant orange. Removing the shell was the best decision anyone made in the park's first decade — the ride went from a claustrophobic spin inside a fruit to an open-air swing over the water.

Tips for Silly Symphony Swings
  • Ride this right after sunset. The view across Paradise Bay with the pier lit is the reason to do it, and the wait at that hour is usually under fifteen minutes.
  • The 40-inch requirement applies to the tandem swings ridden with an adult. Riding alone in a single swing needs 48 inches — a distinction that catches out a lot of families at the loading gate.
  • Take nothing loose. Phones, hats and sunglasses do come out of pockets on this ride and the recovery area under the tower is not accessible during operation.
  • Tandem swings with two adults swing harder than the singles. If you want more out of it, that is the configuration.
  • Repeat visitors: the soundtrack is an arrangement of the score from a 1935 short, and there is a storm sequence in the music that lines up with the fastest part of the rotation.

Golden Zephyr

42"107cm

Spinner · 1½ min

Polished-steel rockets on cables that swing out over Paradise Bay, straight out of a 1928 world's fair.

Golden Zephyr is a reproduction of a 1920s amusement pier ride, the kind built when rocket travel was a magazine-cover fantasy rather than a thing anyone had done. Six burnished silver rockets hang from cables off a central tower, and when the tower rotates they swing outward over the edge of Paradise Bay.

Tips for Golden Zephyr
  • Ride it when you see it running. Wind closures are frequent and unannounced, and there is no way to predict them from the app.
  • This is the gentlest height-restricted ride in the park at 42 inches — which is oddly high for how tame it is, and it disappoints a lot of five-year-olds who could easily handle it.
  • Face outward toward the bay at load if you want the view; the inward-facing bench looks at the tower.
  • Waits are almost always under ten minutes even at peak. It is one of the few genuinely low-friction things to do in the middle of the afternoon.

Spinner · 1 min

A gentle parachute tower where jellyfish-shaped canopies lift you forty feet and let you drift back down.

Jumpin' Jellyfish has been on the pier since 2001 and is one of only two original Paradise Pier flat rides still operating unchanged. Two towers, each with a set of open seats suspended beneath a translucent jellyfish canopy, lift riders up and then release them into a slow, cushioned descent with a few soft bounces at the bottom.

Tips for Jumpin' Jellyfish
  • It closes in wind, like Golden Zephyr next door. Ride when you see it running rather than saving it for later.
  • For a child nervous about heights, this is the right stepping stone before Silly Symphony Swings — the seat is secure, the pace is slow, and it is over in a minute.
  • Waits look longer than they are because the tower is visible from the whole walkway; capacity per cycle is small but cycles are fast.
  • Sunset is the best light for the translucent canopies, which glow from underneath at that hour.
  • Repeat visitors: the two towers run independently and one is consistently faster to load than the other. Watch for a minute at the split and pick the moving side.

World of Color

Any height

Show · 25 min · Multi Pass

The park's nighttime show: a 25-minute water, light, fire and projection production staged on Paradise Bay.

World of Color debuted in 2010 and remains the largest piece of nighttime entertainment at the Disneyland Resort. It is built on roughly 1,200 programmable fountains in Paradise Bay, which project water screens that film is then mapped onto, combined with lasers, flame effects, lighting on the surrounding structures, and a full orchestral soundtrack.

Tips for World of Color
  • The best free standing spot is the center-back of the main terraced viewing area, not the front rail. You want to see the full width of the water screens, and the front rows lose the top of the image and get soaked in mist.
  • A Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservation for the show gets you into a reserved section without the two-hour standing commitment, and it is the single most valuable use of a Multi Pass selection at this park.
  • Dining packages at some park restaurants include a reserved viewing area. Do the arithmetic honestly: you are paying a premium on the meal for a location that is good but not the best in the venue.
  • If you skip it, leave the park before it ends, not after. The exit surge after the finale takes 30 to 40 minutes to clear the esplanade.
  • Bring a layer. Anaheim after dark near a body of water with a thousand fountains running is meaningfully colder than the same spot at 4pm, and the mist compounds it.
  • There is a seasonal version of the show for part of the year. The permanent production is the one described here.

Paradise Garden Bandstand

Any height

Show · 25 min

A small covered bandstand in the gardens off Paradise Bay hosting rotating live musical acts.

The Paradise Garden Bandstand sits in the planted area between the walkway and the water, and it hosts live music on a rotating schedule — mariachi ensembles, steel drum groups, jazz combos and similar acts depending on the day and the season. The programming is not fixed and is posted on the entertainment times board.

Tips for Paradise Garden Bandstand
  • This is the best free shaded seating in the park's southern half. Bring food from Paradise Garden Grill and eat here rather than at a picnic table in the sun.
  • Check the entertainment board at the park entrance for the day's acts — the app is less reliable for atmosphere entertainment.
  • It is a good waiting spot before the nighttime show, since it is a two-minute walk from the main viewing terraces.
  • Repeat visitors: the act rotation varies by day of the week rather than randomly, so if you saw a group you liked, the same slot on the same weekday is your best chance of catching them again.

San Fransokyo Square

The 2023 retheme of Pacific Wharf into the hybrid city from Big Hero 6 — a food district with no rides.

Meet Baymax

Any height

Character meet · 3 min

The only character greeting in San Fransokyo Square, and the gentlest one in the park for anxious kids.

San Fransokyo Square replaced Pacific Wharf in 2023, rethemed to the hybrid city from Big Hero 6, and its one non-food offering is a greeting with Baymax near the center of the district. He appears on a posted rotation with breaks, so check the app rather than wandering over hopefully.

Tips for Meet Baymax
  • Check the app for his appearance times. This is a rotation with real gaps, not a continuous meet.
  • Line up here between 2pm and 4pm, when the rest of the park is at its busiest and this district is mostly people eating.
  • This is the greeting to start with if your child is character-shy — no face, no voice, no pressure.
  • San Fransokyo Square has no rides at all. Budget it as a food-and-photo stop rather than an attraction land, and it will not disappoint you.

Grizzly Peak

The park's original mountain and airfield, with two headliners and the best shade on the property.

Simulator · 5 min · Multi Pass

A hang-glider simulator over a domed screen, flying you across landmarks on five continents in five minutes.

Soarin' opened with the park in 2001 as Soarin' Over California, flying a single-state route that is still the version many locals prefer. In 2016 it was replaced with Soarin' Around the World, a globe-spanning film shot in higher resolution that visits sites across five continents.

Tips for Soarin' Around the World
  • Ask for row B, center. It is the difference between a good ride and the best ride at the park. Ask at the row-assignment podium, not in the main queue.
  • If you are in an outer seat of any row, the edge of the dome curves and the image distorts. It is worth waiting one extra cycle for a center seat if the cast member offers.
  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass covers this, and it is a strong pick because the standby wait is long all day and there is no single rider line.
  • Anyone bothered by heights should know the sensation is real, not simulated — you are genuinely lifted about forty feet with nothing under your feet. Closing your eyes removes the fear entirely and most people never think to try it.
  • Repeat visitors: the 2016 film replaced the original California route, which Disney has periodically brought back for limited runs. The permanent, year-round version is the around-the-world film.

Water ride · 5 min · Multi Pass

A circular-raft rapids ride down a man-made river with two drops, and the wettest ride at either Disneyland Resort park.

Grizzly River Run opened with the park in 2001 and runs around the base of Grizzly Peak, the bear-shaped mountain that is the park's original visual anchor. Eight-passenger circular rafts float a course of rapids, past geysers and under waterfalls, with two drops — the second of which is taken while the raft spins.

Tips for Grizzly River Run
  • You will get soaked, not splashed. Bring a dry bag or use the lockers at the entrance for anything that must not get wet, including phones — a poncho will not save a pocket.
  • The dryer strategy that actually works is a change of socks in your bag. Wet shoes ruin an afternoon far more reliably than a wet shirt.
  • Ride it in the early afternoon on a hot day and it is the best attraction in the park. Ride it at 9pm in February and you will be miserable for the rest of the night.
  • There is no single rider line here, and Multi Pass is worth using because the queue is long, uphill, and largely unshaded.
  • Repeat visitors: the raft's rotation is determined by weight distribution, so a raft with an uneven load spins more and takes the second drop at a wilder angle. Loading with a heavy group on one side is how you get the good version.

Play area · 45 min

A free-range climbing, sliding and zip-lining play trail under real trees — the best hour in the park for kids aged 5 to 12.

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail opened with the park in 2001 and is the single most underused piece of real estate at the Disneyland Resort. It is a genuine adventure playground: rope bridges, a climbing net, cargo nets, log slides, a rock wall, a cave to crawl through, and two short zip lines, all laid out along a wooded trail on the slope of Grizzly Peak.

Tips for Redwood Creek Challenge Trail
  • This is the best shade in the park by a wide margin — real trees, not sail cloth. Use it as your midday base and let the kids burn off two hours of queue frustration.
  • The zip line has both a minimum and a maximum: 42 to 63 inches, and riders must be under 13. Tall 11-year-olds get turned away and it is worth warning them in advance.
  • The trail closes before park closing, often well before, and it does not always reopen after a weather closure. Do it in the afternoon rather than saving it for the evening.
  • Adults can walk the whole trail too, and the upper path gives the best ground-level views of Grizzly Peak's rockwork that exist anywhere in the park.
  • Repeat visitors: there is a small animatronic show at the top of the trail that runs on a loop and has essentially no audience. It is a legitimate hidden corner of the park and takes five minutes.
