What it is
Silly Symphony Swings opened in 2010 as a retheme of the Orange Stinger, which had been on the pier since 2001 and enclosed the same swings inside a giant orange. Removing the shell was the best decision anyone made in the park's first decade — the ride went from a claustrophobic spin inside a fruit to an open-air swing over the water.
The theme is the 1935 Silly Symphony short The Band Concert, in which Mickey conducts an orchestra through a tornado, and the soundtrack is arranged accordingly. There are two swing configurations on the same tower: standard tandem swings that take a small child alongside an adult, and single swings for solo riders.
It is a carnival ride and makes no pretense otherwise. What justifies it is the view. At the top of the rotation you are looking straight across Paradise Bay at Pixar Pier and the Incredicoaster, and after dark that is the best free vantage point in the park.
What riding it is actually like
You are strapped into an open chair on chains, the tower rises, and the whole array spins outward. Ninety seconds of gentle centrifugal lean at maybe forty feet up. There is nothing sudden about it at any point.
The view rotates continuously: Paradise Bay and Pixar Pier on one side, Grizzly Peak's rockwork on another, Cars Land's buttes behind that. Pick a side to face at load and you will get every angle anyway.
The tandem swings ride noticeably heavier and swing wider than the singles because of the combined weight. If you want the more forceful version, take a tandem with another adult.
Is Silly Symphony Swings scary?
You are in an open swing seat with a chain restraint, tilted outward at height, which is the entire fear factor. There is no drop and no speed to speak of. People afraid of heights find it much harder than people afraid of coasters do.

Transfer into an open swing seat with a chain and a belt; riders need enough trunk control to sit upright unsupported for ninety seconds. There is no adaptive seat.
Tips that actually help
- Ride this right after sunset. The view across Paradise Bay with the pier lit is the reason to do it, and the wait at that hour is usually under fifteen minutes.
- The 40-inch requirement applies to the tandem swings ridden with an adult. Riding alone in a single swing needs 48 inches — a distinction that catches out a lot of families at the loading gate.
- Take nothing loose. Phones, hats and sunglasses do come out of pockets on this ride and the recovery area under the tower is not accessible during operation.
- Tandem swings with two adults swing harder than the singles. If you want more out of it, that is the configuration.
- Repeat visitors: the soundtrack is an arrangement of the score from a 1935 short, and there is a storm sequence in the music that lines up with the fastest part of the rotation.
